Maha Mrityunjaya Stotram is a powerful hymn of Lord Shiva that can ward of all evils, remove the fear of death and realize all wishes. It was composed by Markandeya, who is the Son of Sage Mrukandu and a well-known great devotee of Lord Shiva. Sage Mrukandu prayed to Lord Shiva for a son. Lord Shiva asked him whether he wanted an intelligent son, who will live only for 16 years, or a foolish son, who will live for one hundred years. The sage chose the former. A son was born to Mrukandu and was named Markandeya. This boy became a very great devotee of Lord Shiva. When Markandeya turned sixteenth, Yama, the lord of death came to take away his soul. However, Markandeya entered the sanctum sanctorum of Lord Shiva and embraced the Linga, and sang the Maha Mrityunjaya Stotram. Due to the power of this stotra, Lord Yama was not able to take away Markandeya’s soul, and Lord Shiva himself came to his rescue.
