Lineage & Mythology

Vishwakarma is said to have emerged from the creator god Brahma in some texts. In others, he’s considered the son of Vastu Purusha (the spirit of architecture and space). He is sometimes considered the father of five sons, each representing a community of artisans: 1) Carpenters 2) Blacksmiths 3) Bronzesmiths 4) Goldsmiths and 5) Stone sculptors.

  • Architect of the Universe – He is believed to have constructed the heavenly cities (like Swarga), palaces, and divine weapons for the gods.
  • Divine Engineer – He designed tools, weapons, and machines used by the gods.
  • Creator of Great Cities – According to myth, he built:
    • Dwarka – the city ruled by Krishna
    • Lanka – the golden city ruled by Ravana (before he seized it)
    • Indraprastha – the capital of the Pandavas in the Mahabharata

Cultural Significance

Lord Vishwakarma is highly respected in professions involving mechanical work, building, construction, and design. In many parts of India, especially in industrial and rural regions, he is seen as the patron god of working-class people.

Vishwakarma Jayanti is observed on Kanya Sankranti (the sun’s transition into Virgo), which usually falls in September. It is celebrated mainly by Working class people – Engineers, architects, craftsmen, artisans, mechanics, and factory workers. On this day, People worship tools, machines, and vehicles—treating them as sacred for the day. Work is paused, and a Vishwakarma puja is performed in workshops, garages, factories, and offices.
