Brahmacharini Mata – 2nd day of Navratri  

Brahmacharini Mata is Sati Devi in her maiden form while doing severe penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. She is the daughter of Daksha Prajapathi. It is stated that during her penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband She spent 1000 years on the diet of flowers and fruits and another 100 years on the diet on leafy vegetables while sleeping on the floor.

Further, She followed strict fasting regimen while staying at open place in scorching summers, harsh winters and stormy rains. According to Hindu mythologies, She was on diet of Bilva leaves and river water for 3000 years during her penance for Lord Shiva. Later She even stopped eating Bilva leaves and continued her penance without any food and water. She was known as Aparna when She left eating Bilva leaves.

Everyone in the universe were impressed by the tapas performed by Brahmacharini Maa, except Lord Shiva, who at last visits her in disguise of Brahmachari. He then examines her by questioning her riddles, which were answered correctly by Brahmacharini Mata. At last, after praising Parvati for her brain and beauty, the Brahmachari puts a marriage Proposal. Identifying the Brahmachari as none-other than Lord Shiva, Brahmacharini says yes to the Brahmachari. Lord Shiva appear in his true form and finally accepts her and breaks her tapas.

Brahmacharini Maa is depicted as dressed in White, walking on bare feet, with a Japamala or rosary in her right hand, and a Kamandal or Utensil to carry holy water in her left hand. Brahmacharini signifies being unmarried and the colour white signifies purity. It is believed that Maa Brahmacharini endows happiness, peace, prosperity, and grace upon all devotees who worship her.

It is believed that Lord Mangal, the provider of all fortunes, is governed by Goddess Brahmacharini. Her abode is in the Svadhishthana Chakra.
