Skandamata Devi is one of the nine forms of Goddess Durga, worshipped during the festival of Navaratri. She is the mother of Lord Kartikeya, also known as Skanda or Murugan, and is an important deity in Hindu mythology. Her name, Skandamata, directly translates to “the mother of Skanda” (Kartikeya), and she symbolizes maternal love, strength, and protection.

Skandamata Story
A demon named Tarakasura received a boon from Lord Brahma that he could only be killed by the son of Lord Shiva. Knowing that Shiva had renounced the world and was in deep meditation, Tarakasura believed himself to be invincible. He started terrorizing the Universe. The gods, desperate to save the world, approached Goddess Parvati. After much penance and devotion, Parvati was finally able to win Shiva’s heart and marry him. From their divine union, a powerful child was born—Skanda, also known as Kartikeya or Murugan.
However, raising such a divine and powerful child required both maternal love and divine strength. It was Parvati, in her form as Skandamata, who nurtured and protected Skanda with great care. She held him in her lap, radiating love, while at the same time riding a ferocious lion, symbolizing her inner power and readiness to protect the universe.
As Skanda grew, he was given command over the army of the gods. With his mother’s blessings and training, he went to battle and defeated Tarakasura, restoring peace to the heavens. Thus, as Skandamata, Parvati is not only seen as a gentle mother but also as a protector of the cosmos, raising a child who would become the savior of the gods. Her worship emphasizes the power of divine motherhood, and she is seen as an embodiment of both the nurturing and protective aspects of the feminine energy in the universe.
