Makuta Dharana Sarga is a chapter from the Yuddha Kanda of Valmiki Ramayana that describes the crowning (coronation) of Lord Rama as the king of Ayodhya after his return from 14 years of exile and his victory over Ravana. It literally means: Makuta – crown, Dharana – wearing, Sarga – chapter. Brahmaṇā nirmitaṁ pūrvaṁ kirīṭaṁ ratnaśobhitam |
Abhiṣiktaḥ purā yena Manustaṁ dīptatejasam || 1 ||
Tasyānvavāye rājānaḥ kramād yenābhiṣecitāḥ |
Sabhāyāṁ hemakluptāyāṁ śobhitāyāṁ mahādhanaiḥ || 2 ||
Ratnair nānāvidhaiś caiva citritāyāṁ suśobhanaiḥ |
Nānāratnamaye pīṭhe kalpayitvā yathāvidhi || 3 ||
Kirīṭena tataḥ paścād Vasiṣṭhena mahātmanā |
Ṛtvigbhir bhūṣaṇaiś caiva samayokṣyata Rāghavaḥ || 4 ||
Meaning:
Sloka 1: The radiant, jewel-studded crown used for Lord Rama’s coronation was originally created by Lord Brahma. In ancient times, the same divine crown was first placed upon Manu, the illustrious progenitor of mankind.
Sloka 2: From Manu onward, the kings of the Ikshvaku dynasty were crowned with this sacred crown in succession. The coronation ceremony took place in a magnificent royal assembly adorned with gold and immense wealth.
Sloka 3: A beautiful throne decorated with a variety of precious gems was prepared according to the sacred traditions, and Lord Rama was seated upon it for the coronation ceremony.
Sloka 4: Thereafter, the great sage Vasistha, assisted by the officiating priests, placed the divine crown upon Lord Rama’s head and performed His sacred coronation, formally enthroning Him as the King of Ayodhya.
