Vishwakarma Puja honors Lord Vishwakarma, the divine engineer and architect of the universe. It is a day to recognize the contribution of skilled workers, artisans, engineers, mechanics, and architects—those who create, build, and design the material world.

Vishwakarma is considered the Hindu god of architecture, engineering, craftsmanship, and construction. He is often depicted as a bearded man with multiple arms, holding tools like a scale, a hammer, a chisel, and measuring instruments – symbols of his role as a divine craftsman.

Where is Vishwakarma Puja Celebrated?

This puja is especially significant in Factories, Workshops, Garages, Offices, Industrial areas, Construction sites. It is primarily observed by Working-class people – Engineers, Artisans, Machinists, Mechanics, Architects, Carpenters, Welders, Blacksmiths, Industrial workers and business owners.

It is especially popular in the Indian states of West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Assam, Punjab, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.

When is it celebrated?

Vishwakarma Puja is done on the day of Vishwakarma Jayanti. It is typically observed on Kanya Sankranti – the day when the Sun enters the zodiac sign Virgo (Kanya). It usually falls in the month of September every year.

Rituals & Customs

Workplaces, machines, tools, and vehicles are cleaned and decorated with flowers, rangoli, and garlands. A clay or framed image of Lord Vishwakarma is installed, usually within the factory or office premises. In some regions, temporary pandals are erected for community celebrations. People offer prayers to tools, machinery, and equipment, as these are seen as sacred instruments of creation and livelihood. Workers do not operate machines on this day, treating them as gods.

Offerings of fruits, sweets, coconut, betel leaves, and flowers are made. Prasadam is distributed among workers and devotees. In many places, employers arrange a community feast or meal for workers. Cultural programs, singing, and celebrations are common in large industrial zones.
