Nagula Chavithi Katha in English

Long ago, in a certain village, there lived a pious Brahmin couple. They were devout, truthful, and kind. One day, the Brahmin’s wife went to the well to fetch water. Unknowingly, while drawing water, she accidentally struck and killed a baby serpent with her water pot.

When she realized what had happened, she was terrified and returned home to tell her husband. The Brahmin told her, “You have done a grave mistake. Snakes are revengeful beings – let us pray to Naga Devata for forgiveness.”

Despite their prayers, the mother serpent, enraged over her child’s death, came to their house that night and bit the Brahmin couple, killing both. Their daughter, who was away at that time, returned home the next morning to find her parents dead. Heartbroken, she wept bitterly and began to pray sincerely to Naga Devata for mercy.

Moved by her devotion and innocence, Lord Nagaraja appeared before her and said:

“O virtuous one, your parents’ death was due to fate, but because of your devotion, I grant you a boon. On the Chavithi day (fourth day) of Shuklapaksha in the month of Kartika, if you worship me with milk, turmeric, kumkum, and offerings, your parents will be restored to life.”

The girl faithfully observed the Nagula Chavithi Vratam, worshipping the serpent gods with full devotion. By the grace of Naga Devata, her parents were brought back to life.

From that day onward, it became a sacred custom for women to observe Nagula Chavithi with fasting and prayers — for the welfare of their family, protection from snakebites, and the long life of their children.
