Chhath Puja Katha in English
Long ago, there was a righteous king named Priyavrat, the son of Manu, and his queen Malini. Despite their deep devotion and prayers, they had no children. Saddened, the king and queen performed a Yajna (holy ritual) conducted by the sage Kashyapa to seek blessings for a child.
After the Yajna, Queen Malini conceived, but sadly, the baby was born lifeless. Heartbroken, the king and queen were in deep sorrow and prayed to the gods for mercy.
Moved by their grief, Chhathi Devi (Chhathi Maiya) — who is believed to be the sixth form of Goddess Katyayani and the protector of children — appeared before them. She said:
“O King, I am the sixth form of the Supreme Goddess. I bless all with children, health, and happiness. If you worship me with purity and devotion, your wishes shall be fulfilled.”
The king and queen performed the Chhath Puja with full faith. Soon, Queen Malini was blessed with a beautiful, healthy child. From that day onward, people began worshipping Chhathi Maiya and Surya Dev on the sixth day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of Kartik month — and this became known as Chhath Puja.
