Chhath Puja is an ancient festival dedicated to Surya Dev (the Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya (the Goddess associated with the Sun’s energy). It is mainly celebrated in the Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Nepal, though devotees all over the world now observe it. Meaning & Significance

Chhath literally means “sixth,” and the festival is observed on the sixth day of the month of Kartika (October–November), right after Diwali.

The Sun God is worshipped for life, energy, and prosperity, as well as for the well-being of family and society. The rituals are also a way to thank nature for sustaining life and to purify the body and mind.

Chhath Rituals

  • Day 1 – Nahay Khay (Bath and Eat) 
    Spiritual meaning of Nahay Khay is Cleansing the body and soul.
    Devotees take a holy bath (often in the Ganga or another river), clean their homes, and eat only one meal prepared with great purity.
  • Day 2 – Kharna (Fasting) 
    Spiritual meaning of Kharna is Practicing self-control and purity.
    A full-day fast is observed. In the evening, devotees prepare kheer (rice pudding made with jaggery and milk) and chapati to offer to the Sun. After offering, they break the fast.
  • Day 3 – Sandhya Arghya (Evening Offering):
    Devotees fast again and prepare prasad such as thekua (a sweet made from wheat flour, jaggery, and ghee).
    In the evening, they go to a riverbank or pond to offer “arghya” (offering of water and fruits) to the setting sun. It is thanking the setting sun for the day’s life and energy.
  • Day 4 – Usha Arghya (Morning Offering):
    Early next morning, devotees offer arghya to the rising sun, praying for family health and prosperity. It is about welcoming the rising sun as the symbol of hope and renewal.
    After this, the fast is broken and prasad is distributed among family and community.

  • Fruits (Sugarcane, Banana, Coconut)

All offerings are made in bamboo baskets and Soop (winnowing trays), symbolizing purity and eco-friendliness.
