Chandraghanta Devi Story
After years of intense meditation, Parvati married Lord Shiva and they started living happily in Kailasa. However, a demon named Tarkasura sought to kill Parvati, as he was destined to be killed only by the biological son of Lord Shiva and Parvati. Tarakasura sent another demon, Jatukasura, a bat-like creature, to attack Parvati. When Lord Shiva sat in deep meditation, Jatukasura attacked Kailsa with an army of bats, which darkened the sky. He started to assault the Shiva Gana or the followers of Shiva. Parvati went to Lord Shiva and pleaded for rescue, however, Shiva reminded her that she is Shakti, the Mother goddess, and is capable of handling any challenge.
Encouraged by Lord Shiva, Parvati devi decided to fight Jatukasura and ventured into the darkness. Realizing she needed moonlight, she called upon Lord Chandra dev, who illuminated the battlefield. Wearing the crescent moon on her forehead, she prepared for battle and summoned a pack of wolves to aid her against the bats.
As the battle raged on, Parvati discovered that Jatukasura drew strength from the bats. To disperse them, she rang a bell (ghanta) loudly, sending the bats flying away. A wolf then leaped onto Jatukasura, immobilizing him. Seizing the moment, Parvati struck the demon with her ghanta, cutting off his wings and ultimately defeating him.
This fierce form of Parvati, wielding a sword in one hand and a bell in the other, adorned with the crescent moon, and sitting on a wolf became known as Chandraghanta. Shiva later assured Parvati that her victory would inspire courage in anyone facing battles and obstacles, emphasizing that no woman is weak or helpless without her man. Through her triumph, Chandraghanta stands as a powerful symbol of inner strength and resilience.
