Ahoi Ashtami Vrat Katha in English

Once upon a time in a village, there lived a kind and religious woman with seven sons. One day, as preparations for Diwali began, she went to the forest to bring soil for renovating her home. While digging, her spade accidentally struck and killed a lion cub (or porcupine, in some versions).

Unaware of the consequences, she returned home. Soon after, her sons began to fall sick one after another and eventually all seven died. The woman was devastated. In grief and guilt, she confessed her mistake to a wise elder. The elder advised her to worship Ahoi Mata and observe a fast on the Ashtami of Kartik Krishna Paksha.

She followed the vrat with full devotion – drawing the image of Ahoi Mata, fasting without food or water, and offering prayers. Moved by her penance, Ahoi Mata appeared in a dream and forgave her, restoring all her seven sons to life.

Since then, mothers observe Ahoi Ashtami Vrat to seek the blessings of the Goddess for their children’s long life, health, and prosperity.
